| Desperately seeking squirrel cutter for bentos! |
[July 08, 2008 @ 10:37pm] |
|
I have been dying to do something with a squirrel for my DH's bento lunch. You see, he's a TOTAL SQUIRREL FANATIC. Yep, so much so that the ladies in the park whisper behind his back, 'That's the squirrelman." So this is also my first real effort at something other than a simple flower in his bento. It’s very rough and crude but I intend to get better. This is “supposed” to be one of those dark purple-leafed trees with an orange squirrel sitting in it. The trunk is cut from hickory tofu, the grass and leaves are lettuce. The squirrel is cut with a paring knife from a slice of carrot. If only I could find a squirrel cutter or something. Not a lot of squirrel tools out there. I had to tell hubby there was a squirrel in there and he thought the tree trunk was the squirrel at first. I guess I have to practice a whole lot more.
(Go to my blog for a close up of the squirrel and to see what the bento artists at e-obento are capable of.)

| [news] Matsumoto Jun leading the tanpatsu for 24 hour tv 2008! |
[July 09, 2008 @ 4:23am] |
It's been announced this morning that Matsumoto Jun ♥ will be in the leading role for the annual tanpatsu (drama special one episode long) for the 24 hour tv.
As all we know Arashi are the main personality for this show this year so rumors about one of them in the usual tanpatsu were out some weeks ago but now we know they are all true!
The title of the story will be: "Myuu no Anyo Papa ni Ageru" (I will give papa Myuu's legs); it is based on a true story of Yamaguchi Hayato, a 25 years old man with a wife (that will be played by Karina, at her 2nd co-starring with Jun after Bambino!) and a 2 year old daughter, Myuu. He has got the "CIDP" disease (info here), which hit every 100,000 person and is incurable.
A really challenging role for him because the disease is cronical and progressively you can't walk or use your arms and you can also experience breathing problem... it will be a real sad tanpatsu as usual ;_;
"Myuu no Anyo Papa ni Ageru" will air on 30th August (Jun's birthday ^_^)

| Musubi lunch |
[July 08, 2008 @ 4:00pm] |
In Japanese, its called onigiri. In Hawaii, its called musubi. Its just one big rice ball, filled or unfilled. Very tasty bento fare.
I had a deep, deep craving for rice and pickles. DEEP.
So I made some musubi for lunch!
Musubi filled with tuna/mayo/green onion mixture. Bottom tier has kimchee, takuan, and grape tomatoes.
Hit the spot!

| newbie intro and help |
[July 08, 2008 @ 5:46pm] |
Hello, I'm Jay. I'm a college student, lactose-intolerant and kind of clueless when it comes to cooking. I'm trying to eat healthier on a budget, and figured bring my own food to school/work would be cheaper/better for me than the vending machines.
I picked up my first bento box this afternoon ( Pics coming soon!) and was wondering, what are some of the basic "Essential, everyone-must- have-these" type accessories? And where would be the best place to find them?
ETA: I can't buy anything online, so I'm limited to the local big box stores, and where ever else I can find them... but links to things will help give me an idea for what to look for at least
Thanks!

| Curried mushroom & skate wing bento lunches |
[July 08, 2008 @ 11:51am] |
Contents of preschooler bento lunch & snack: Roast chicken drumstick, baby carrots, cherry, kiwifruit, blueberries, and mild curried mushrooms (khombi tarkari). Morning prep time: 6 minutes, using leftover rotisserie chicken and curried mushrooms. Full details here at Lunch in a Box.
Contents of preschooler bento lunch & snack: Grilled skate wing with chili sambal sauce, sauteed pea shoots with garlic and Thai oyster sauce, plum tomatoes, rice, shrimp-flavored furikake rice sprinkles, and cherries. I've been searching for ways of preparing stingray since making it last year; I finally came close to my memory of eating it in Singapore at the Airport Hawker Center in the 1990’s! Morning prep time: 5 minutes, using all leftovers. Full details with a link to the recipe for skate wing with chili sambal here at Lunch in a Box.

So, Bento #300 totally snuck up on me. I threw together a bento with leftovers, not really focusing on details but more to have a lunch ready so I don't spend an hour hopelessly trolling the fridge, then I come upstairs to upload the photo and realize -- yikes! -- this is 300! Chili with rice in the thermos (local pastured beef in the chili); homemade coleslaw with local cabbage, onion and carrot; olive garnish; leftover orzo and spinach salad from the grocery. Fairly blah, I know, but I will be so happy to have this ready at lunchtime.

| Bento # 360 |
[July 08, 2008 @ 10:29am] |
I know, I know.. It's an "anniversary bento" of sorts, and it's fairly dull.. Thing is, it's hubby's b-day today and I had to make this inbetween wishing him a happy birthday, giving presents and eating breakfast - all before I had to leave for work... So I more or less had to grab what I had in the freezer and bash it together. Anyway.. the salmon Kittys make up for some of the dullness, right?
 |
Bento # 360
Mixed vegetables with curry and oyster sauce. Pickled onions on skewers.
Jasmine rice cooked with cardamom, topped with Hello Kitty made of salmon paté. |

| Some catching up... |
[July 08, 2008 @ 1:48am] |
I haven't posted here in a while... but, I still have been cooking a bit, and making a couple of bentos whenever I feel like making one ^^ I recently got the ds game called "Can't Decide What To Eat?" which is basically, a cook book! It's pretty awesome! It has recipes from around the world (including JAPAN! hehe) and lists all ingredients and steps, and walks you through the whole process. Check it out if you enjoy cooking~~
To begin with, a pretty colorful bento! From left to right: Sweet tamago, strawberries, weiners, carrots, broccoli, and some rice concoction~
( 7 More Photos ) That's it for now... hopefully, I'll cook more, now that I have a whole bunch of recipes at hand~~ ^__^ Thank you for looking~~!

| Cleaning Out the Freezer Bento |
[July 07, 2008 @ 11:02pm] |
Main: Chicken katsu Sides: Miso and mayo shiitake, Japanese potato salad with corn, soy and ginger cucumbers Plus: Brown and white rice with carrot furikake
It's been a while! ^^ I was cleaning out my freezer before I moved when I made this particular lunch. Both the katsu and the carrot furikake were in my freezer and, tragically, had to be eaten. (And yes, that's a lot of furikake on my rice, but I was trying to use it up.)
Got a few general comments on freezing katsu for future use on my blog.

Well, the camera battery is almost dead, and the charger is nowhere to be found T_T; so for now, pics will be taken using my handy Macbook cam.
Top/Left: strawberries, blueberries, and tamarind (which looks gross and weird, but tastes yummy... IMO) Bottom/Right: tri-colored donburi w/ bacon, shredded carrot, and sweet egg
*cries* The egg came out looking all weird... it was really tasty though. And the carrot was boiled in some mix that I kinda threw together (water, soy sauce, mirin, and sugar). All in all, it was a pretty good lunch, and much admired by my co-workers ^^;;
